YouTube has announced that on its fifth birthday it has managed to hit the altogether very impressive figure of two billion views a day.

Strange to think YouTube didn't exist until five years ago...
The announcement was made via the service’s blog, which goes into some detail on the journey YouTube has made, from its startup days to its current incarnation as a part of the day-to-day browsing habits of a significant portion of all web users. As the blog post itself points out, that two billion views figure is fairly impressive in terms of the content being served, especially if you take into consideration the fact that the figure is “nearly double the prime-time audience of all three major U.S. television networks combined.”

It seems that YouTube’s traffic numbers for music videos might not be quite as accurate as many had hoped, with Warner Music Group pointing to some fairly questionable numbers.

YouTube does have its own music service...
Word comes via Cnet that Warner Music saw a massive spike in the number of unique visitors to its various different YouTube videos between over the course of December and January, with reports indicating that it had managed to more than double its traffic, seeing views around the 47 million mark in a month. Still, all might not be as well as it seems from that description…

YouTube might well serve over a billion videos a day, but it turns out the average user only spends fifteen minutes a day on the service… something that YouTube wants to rectify.

According to the New York Times, the folks at YouTube are working on tightening up the suggested videos that the video streaming service shows its users in an attempt to have them spend more time on the site per day. YouTube’s director of product management, Hunter Walk, aside from having a very impressive name, is working on the problem, and he sees telly as the model to emulate, saying,
“Our average user spends 15 minutes a day on the site. They spend about five hours in front of the television. People say ‘YouTube is so big,’ but I really see that we have a ways to go.”
