Android Gets Quake 3 Port

Posted on 26 February 2010 by komplettie

Android developer Thuderbird2k has ported the fondly remembered Quake 3 Arena to Android devices, though it won’t run playably on just any old handset.

Mad to think of Quake 3 as a mobile game...

Word comes via AndroidandMe of the development, a project which comes under the fairly unusual name “kwaak3.” According to the various reports floating around, it only took one day to compile and load Quake 3 itself, with a lot more time spent tweaking the port so that it would run with networking, sound and support for the device’s touch-sensitive displays. Still, there are some solid reasons not to bother with the sound.

Nokia Patents Bendy-Phone

Posted on 19 January 2010 by komplettie

Nokia has filed a patent for a bendable phone, which bears some resemblance to the concepts it had shown off for its “Morph” design a couple of years back.

Oh dear... I have nanite envy... :(

While the patent filing, picked up by SlashGear, doesn’t tell us nearly as much as we’d like to know about Nokia’s potential flexible phone, we’re still curious about its applications. The original morph as it was showed off, seemed to boast a flexible display build around a semi-transparent and equally flexible phone (all thanks to the still-pending wonders of nanotechnology). Users were shown snapping the phone around their wrists, at which point the Morph threw up a lock-icon.

Nexus One Has Slow First Week

Posted on 13 January 2010 by komplettie

It seems that Google’s Nexus One might not be having quite the massive impact that many predicted it would when it was first announced. Initial reports put the number of devices sold in the first week of availability around the 20,000 mark.

While there aren’t any official figures out yet, the folks at Flurry have compiled a report. Flurry monitors very closely indeed the number of both Android-based smartphones and Apple’s iPhones in circulation, and seems to have arrived to the figure of around 20,000 Nexus Ones in the field fairly quickly and accurately indeed. The word from Flurry is that,

Windows 7 Mobile Due Late 2010

Posted on 15 December 2009 by komplettie

So far, Microsoft has been fairly tight-lipped about just when we can expect to see the next iteration of Windows Mobile, but now it seems that Microsoft UK’s Phil Moore has revealed just when we’ll be able to pick it up.

According to Mobile News, Moore spoke is some depth at the Connect technology summit in London about the current state of the smartphone industry, basically admitting that Windows Mobile doesn’t quite have the same degree of reach as its competitors. Indeed, as Microsoft’s head of mobility, it seems as though Moore is well placed to know, but he says that Microsoft isn’t finished in the mobile space yet, despite the setbacks.

With the launch of Flash 10.1 Adobe is boasting Flash support soon to be added to a number of smartphones and mobile devices.

The BBC is reporting that Adobe is to push a full-featured version of Flash to most “higher-end” handsets by 2010, which means the next couple of months should see those manufacturers who manage to be ahead of the curve touting Flash compatibility on their various smartphones.

If nothing else, this will open up a rich world of web-based applications and video to users with devices capable of handling the content. It’ll also stand as one of the biggest points against Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch lines. While the iPhone and iPod Touch both support YouTube, Flash support in Apple’s mobile version of its Safari browser has been a noticeable omission.

RIM Flirting with Touchscreen/QWERTY Combo

Posted on 28 September 2009 by komplettie

Despite the news that BlackBerry manufacturer RIM’s profits are down, it seems there are still big things happening at RIM, including the news that it’s working on a device that boasts both a touch-screen and a full qwerty keyboard.

For now details are relatively thin, but the combination of the two interfaces is a move that many BlackBerry users will be pleased by.

Of course, there’s no word on just what will happen with O2’s iPhone exclusivity in Ireland, but with the original deal to sell the device exclusively set to expire in October we’re all very interested to see just what happens with the iPhone in Ireland. Of course, the move by Orange is a pretty positive sign that we’ll see similar uptake here, but for now details seem pretty scant on just what might happen to the iPhone in Ireland.
