Sony Pushes 3D TVs for World Cup

Posted on 24 May 2010 by Komplettie

Sony is using the fast-approaching World Cup as a means of promoting its range of 3D capable displays, with new advertising focussing on the immersion that 3D display technology could add to sporting events.

Sony’s new ad for its 3D displays, for those who haven’t seen it yet, features a raft of various different effects and situations in which the viewing experience could be improved by using 3D-capable kit. To highlight the point, the whole ad is presented in a kind of staggered, not-quite-stereoscopic doubling that gives the effect of seeing the proceedings from a not-quite-3D source. It’s then superimposed with the words, “Maybe it’s time to get a 3D TV.”

Avatar Breaks Piracy Records

Posted on 28 April 2010 by komplettie

Avatar has managed to break the record for the Blu-Ray movie release that’s seen most piracy since the format launched back in 2007.

Yesterday, it was widely reported that Avatar had managed to break the first day sales record set by The Dark Knight last week when it released last Tuesday. Impressively enough, Avatar’s success carried on, seeing it pass The Dark Knight’s total sales over eighteen months by Thursday. Of course, not all of the interest in James Cameron’s most recent record-breaking movie has taken the form of legitimate purchases of the movie on Blu-Ray. Indeed, it seems that Blu-Ray rips are seeing an unusually heavy degree of traffic.

Avatar Breaks Blu-Ray Records

Posted on 27 April 2010 by komplettie

Avatar, which became the highest box office grossing movie of all time towards the end of last year, has managed to break records again this month, beating The Dark Knight’s record for Blu-Ray sales.

Despite some harsh criticism, Avatar has done very well for itself

It seems that James Cameron’s Avatar’s monumental success hasn’t been harmed by the fact that, in the transition from big-screen to Blu-Ray, it happens to have gone from 3D back to 2D. Gizmodo is reporting that, not only did Avatar manage to break the record set by last year’s Batman sequel, it managed to more than double the then-record breaking 600,000 first day sales that The Dark Knight set last year, but, far more impressively, went on to beat The Dark Knight’s 2.5 million sales over eighteen months in just days, hitting the 2.7 million mark on Thursday.

Cameron Blasts Watching Movies Over iPhone

Posted on 25 March 2010 by jjkomplett

Say what you like about James Cameron but the man certainly says what he thinks. The Avatar director is currently doing press for the Blu-ray release of the enormously successful 3D yarn and in the process he has got in a nice dig at people who watch movies via their iPhone, saying that watching any movie in this format is “dumb”

James Cameron and Sam Worthington on the Avatar set.

“I don’t feel that I’m making movies for iPhones,” he explained. “If someone wants to watch it on an iPhone, I’m not going to stop them, especially if they’re paying for it, but I don’t recommend it.”

Google Drops Torrent Site from Search

Posted on 02 March 2010 by komplettie

It seems that Google has dropped torrent site BTJunkie from its search results after having received a request from Fox which specifically mentioned a torrent of box office record breaking movie Avatar.

It's hard to see Google adding BTJunkie again until Avatar drops from the main page...

The removal of BTJunkie from Google’s search results isn’t the first time Google has made the move to entirely disappear a torrent site from its search pages, as TorrentFreak is quick to point out. Last year, Google did very much the same thing to file sharing giant The Pirate Bay, though it later admitted that removing the entirety of The Pirate Bay from its search results was an error… it’ll be interesting to see if the same is true of this latest removal.

Crytek’s New Engine Has Full 3D Support

Posted on 02 March 2010 by jjkomplett

Here’s a nice short, sharp shock for PC gamers this morning, with the gaming developers over at Crytek announcing that their forthcoming CryENGINE3 game engine will feature full 3D support.

As TechRadar points out, Crytek’s Crysis is still, for many, “the benchmark for graphical prowess on a PC, so the news will be welcomed by many in the PC gaming community”. Crytek’s latest is also set to be a multiplatform engine, which means the 3D gaming it engenders will be able to be enjoyed not only on the PC, but also on the Xbox 360 and PS3, if developers wish to create 3D games for those platforms. Avatar 3D Blu-Ray Release set for November

Posted on 19 February 2010 by komplettie

It seems that those of us anxiously awaiting the release of James Cameron’s record-breaking Avatar on Blu-Ray in 3D will have to wait a little longer, with Cameron revealing that the release is scheduled for November.

Anyone looking forward to Avatar in 3D at home is going to have to wait...

TechRadar is reporting that Cameron revealed the news in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal. The standard DVD release of Avatar is scheduled for April, while those looking to watch the 3D version in the comfort of their own homes are going to have to sit on their hands for seven months while they wait for the Blu-Ray release.

Intimate Tech: Nvidia gf100

Posted on 01 February 2010 by komplettie

Over the course of the last couple of months, we’ve been hearing an awful lot from Nvidia. While a lot of that attention has been focused on the upcoming release of Nvidia’s second generation Tegra (for now still tentatively referred to as “Tegra 2”), there’s been more and more focus on the upcoming GF100.

The card itself looks a little bulky...

For now, there are a few fairly vital bits and pieces that we just don’t know about the GF100, but there’s still enough floating around to get a very solid picture indeed of what Nvidia is going with the new hardware. For those who are saying, as Shelton did, “Wait… what happened Fermi?” there’s at least the fact that we’re told the GF-100 is Fermi-derived, so we know it has that history behind it at least.

In Simple Terms:

For now, we don’t know the clock-speed of the GF100, and as a result there’s precious little to know about the power consumption for now, except that it’s already been noted to be a little heavier on power than Nvidia’s own GT200.

Still, before we get bogged down in technical terms, we can help to explain a bit about the GF100 and why there’s so much fuss about it since CES, in terms that just about anyone can understand. It’s relatively simple, but it seems as though very few people have actually tried to describe the GF100 in simple terms.

GF100 was initially just the codename, many have pointed out that it doesn’t stand for GeForce, as some expected, but for Graphics-Fermi. Still, it looks as though the moniker has stuck, and Nvidia could well launch the card as GF100. It was originally meant to be released last year, but rumour has it that due to unusually low yields it’s been bumped back, with many expressing fears that the release date is still looking a little hazy now, despite the fact that Nvidia is saying we’ll see it in March.

Avatar Officially Defeats Titanic

Posted on 26 January 2010 by komplettie

After some fairly dubious initial reviews about its storyline, it seems that James Cameron’s Avatar has finally unseated Titanic as the biggest blockbuster of all time.

The film has long been expected to pass the previous record holder, Cameron’s own Titanic, out in terms of pure ticket sales and has just generally being touted as the biggest movie ever, in case anyone hadn’t quite gotten the point yet. It’s also very interesting to note that it seems to be the fact that the film is one of the first truly major releases to boast 3D, an option that it seems the vast majority of those who have gone to see it have taken advantage of.

Star Wars to go 3D

Posted on 21 January 2010 by komplettie

It seems that James Cameron’s Avatar has spurred George Lucas tentative plans to see a Star Wars release in 3D.

Pleasedon'truinit, pleasedon'truinit, pleasedon'truinit :(

According to TechRadar, Lucas has had a 3D Star Wars project on hold for quite some time, but was so wowed by Cameron’s Avatar that he has decided to proceed with the plan, saying that, “I’m happy it’s so successful, and worked very well in 3D.” Indeed, Lucas wasn’t just impressed by the fact that Avatar has had such long-running success, but with the implementation of technology involved, saying that,

3D TVs to Save Industry?

Posted on 11 January 2010 by komplettie

It seems that 3D displays are being hailed as a possible saviour for those manufacturers who’ve been hit hardest by the current recession, though some are more sceptical than others.

According to the BBC, industry experts are optimistic about the new technology, which they predict could take off in a big way over the course of the next year. Indeed, the figure that they’re expecting to sell comes it at around the 3.4 million mark, which would put manufacturers very well placed indeed to take advantage of the burgeoning 3D market. What is perhaps most surprising is the honesty with which manufacturers have discussed their current positions.

Cinema Sales Outpace Discs in 2009

Posted on 06 January 2010 by komplettie

It’s been a long time since cinema sales last managed to outperform sales of disc-based media for movies, but it seems that in 2009 cinema has managed to push past discs again.

According to Adams Media Research, the strong performance from cinemas was bolstered by the release of “3D exhibition at a premium price,” which seems as though it could be a fairly roundabout way of saying that Avatar has been performing so very well that it’s managed to pull in crowds that cinemas haven’t seen in quite a while. Indeed, it seems that 3D cinema provides enough spectacle to draw in big crowds, with the news that Avatar has managed to pull become the fourth biggest grossing film ever, already.
