Posted on 03 September 2010 by komplettie

Toshiba has unveiled their latest entry into the 3D market, with the announcement  that the BDX3100KB 3D Blu-ray player will be released later this year.

The issue of whether or not 3D is the future is apparently not a question that manufacturers are paying all that much attention to, with IFA this week proving that, despite warnings that the UK public in particular don’t exactly care about 3D.

Panasonic in another dimension

Posted on 01 September 2010 by komplettie

It’s not just tablets that are getting column inches these days, oh no. 3-D is still knocking about, demanding to be looked at when really, nobody cares all that much.

In fact, the confidence that manufacturers are showing in 3D is almost enough to turn me against my 2D tv, but I just can’t do it. Even if Panasonic are the latest to get aboard the 3D train.

PlayStation 3 Sales Beat Xbox 360 by 4 Million

Posted on 30 July 2010 by jjkomplett

Earlier this month we reported that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 got a massive bump in sales thanks to the new 250GB version available in certain parts of the globe. Overall though, the last 12 months has seen the Microsoft console lose out heavily to the PlayStation 3 in sales, with the Sony product outselling it by four million units worldwide.

The figures mark a huge turnaround from this time last year, when the 360 outsold the PS3 by 1.5 million units in the preceding 12 months. The full figures show that Microsoft sold 10.3 million consoles in its last financial year, which ended June 30. However, Sony confirmed yesterday that it sold 14.3 million PlayStation 3s in the same period, pushing the machine’s total sales to 38.1 million. Continue Reading

Sky to Launch 3D Channel in October

Posted on 28 July 2010 by jjkomplett

Sky has confirmed it will launch Sky 3D later this year. The channel will be Europe’s first 3D TV channel and will beam into thousands of homes across Ireland on 1 October this year.

Bertie Ahern enjoys 3D TV coverage in between the odd pint of Bass.

A press release from the company tells how 3D TV demonstrations will be available in 13 Sky shops across the country over the coming weeks (full list below). The channel is very excited about showing the overblown nonsense that is Ryder Cup in three dimensions, while 3D movies like ‘Bolt’ and ‘Monster vs. Aliens’ will also get their “international 3D TV debuts” on the channel as well. Panasonic Preparing 3D Camcorder

Posted on 22 July 2010 by jjkomplett

Now, it’s not that we’re a sucker for all things 3D – in fact it’s becoming slightly tedious that barely a day goes past without outlandish industry predictions of how many 3D TVs will be sold this year or pretty pointless 3D gaming peripherals hitting the market – but news that Panasonic is about to unveil a consumer-level 3D camcorder definitely sits in the cool column.

Slashgear reports that  Panasonic is yet to provide details about the new model, but has confirmed a Tokyo press event on July 28th and that it will be far more in line with their current, 2D range in terms of bulk, than their existing AG-3DA1 professional 3D camcorder. Continue Reading

LG Bets Big on 3D Notebooks

Posted on 19 July 2010 by jjkomplett

Near the start of the year LG announced its rather ambitious target of selling one million 3D TVs by the end of 2010. While there’s been no update on how that particular mission is going, LG is continuing to bet big on 3D as it announced this morning that the company is to raise shipments of 3D notebook computers by 30% in 2011.

Obviously feeling that 3D fever is still alive and well in the masses, LG has forecast that global sales of 3D notebook computers would increase five-fold next year to 1.1 million units and jump to 13.8 million units by 2015. Obviously a company full of optimists then. Continue Reading

Sony Launches Blu-Ray Friendly Home Cinema

Posted on 05 July 2010 by jjkomplett

Sony is attempting to solve one of the main 3D-related gripes of home cinema fans by launching a range of three-dimensional-friendly home cinema systems capable of receiving and passing on 3D Blu-ray video signals.

The HT-AS5, not for fans of minimalism perhaps.

The new Sony new line-up comprises two surround sound/amplifier combis – the HT-AS5 and HT-AF5 – and the BDV-470SS, a “complete system” that adds a 3D Blu-ray player. Continue Reading

Sony Chief Has Sly Dig at 3DS

Posted on 22 June 2010 by jjkomplett

Now this comes from a translation so it’s difficult to take this is gospel but Sony CEO Kaz Hirai has reportedly made some less than complimentary remarks about the capabilities of naked-eye 3D in a magazine interview in Japan.

Practicing his evil laugh no doubt, Kaz Hirai’s reported comments are pretty thinly veiled.

While he doesn’t mention the Nintendo 3DS specifically, he does comment that  “internally conducted research” at Sony has shown that glasses-free 3D lacks “precision” and at present has “limitations”. Given that the 3DS is the only naked-eye 3D platform out there at present you can take it that Hirai was focusing on it with his comments. Continue Reading

Nintendo Reveals 3DS

Posted on 16 June 2010 by Komplettie

Nintendo has taken the opportunity to unveil its upcoming handheld games console, the 3DS, at this year’s E3, showing off the various features of the 3D capable successor to its phenomenally successful DS.

Engadget managed to get up close and personal with the device

The biggest question posed by Nintendo’s DS has long been whether or not the company would be able to effectively follow the device. Given that the install base for the DS was so large, and the games, for the most part, not too demanding in terms of hardware, the company could have had a real fight on its hands trying to persuade users to trade up to a newer device. Of course, the addition of glassesless 3D to the device will go a long way towards mitigating that reluctance to upgrade.

PS3 3D Retrofitting ‘Doesn’t Fit All Titles’

Posted on 03 June 2010 by jjkomplett

The word retrofitting will make many people’s blood boil at the minute. They would mainly be the people that spent a some hard earned cash going to see the absolutely farcical 3D retrofitting job that was done on April’s ‘Clash of the Titans’.

Retrofitting games has been a big topic in recent weeks too and Sony has given some frank details about its experience in retro-fitting its back catalogue of PS3 games and admits that it is hard work. Continue Reading
