Bing Continues to Grow Nicely

Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, has continued to grow, despite analyst’s expectations that it had either already reached a terminal point and settled down or even be declining.

Rumours of Bing’s demise it seems had been greatly exaggerated. September figures for the search engine were released by several outfits that indicated Bing’s market share has started to slide, and the press was quick to pounce on what many perceived to be the carcass of Microsoft’s search engine. Since then though, more reliable figures have indicated that Bing had actually grown during the month of September, and TechCrunch is reporting that it’s managed to do so again in October.

Bing’s latest growth spurt takes it up just of the 10% mark at 9.9% of the US domestic search market. The question many have been asking is just where all of Bing’s users are coming from… and the answer seems to be Yahoo, with the now clearly ailing former search giant rebranding itself as a web portal and seeing its search share drop by 0.8%.

With Bing growing, and yet to see a single month without growth, it’d make sense that the folks at Google would be starting to get a little concerned about Bing, except that Google’s share of the market grew by roughly the same amount as Microsoft’s, so for now we’d imagine that both are quite happy to be cannibalising Yahoo’s old customers.

We’ll be curious to see how things go for Yahoo over the course of November, especially given the fact that its CEO, Carol Bartz, was so clear on the need for Yahoo to do something new with its rebranding to become relevant… she described Yahoo as “boring,” which probably isn’t ideal for someone with so public a job, but that’s life.

If you’re interested enough to want to check out a lot of graphs and charts of just how well Bing has been doing in the five or so months since Microsoft launched it, then you’d do well to check out the TechCrunch piece on the latest figures Bing has managed to generate.
