Avatar, which became the highest box office grossing movie of all time towards the end of last year, has managed to break records again this month, beating The Dark Knight’s record for Blu-Ray sales.
Despite some harsh criticism, Avatar has done very well for itself
It seems that James Cameron’s Avatar’s monumental success hasn’t been harmed by the fact that, in the transition from big-screen to Blu-Ray, it happens to have gone from 3D back to 2D. Gizmodo is reporting that, not only did Avatar manage to break the record set by last year’s Batman sequel, it managed to more than double the then-record breaking 600,000 first day sales that The Dark Knight set last year, but, far more impressively, went on to beat The Dark Knight’s 2.5 million sales over eighteen months in just days, hitting the 2.7 million mark on Thursday.
If nothing else, it’s an impressive tally, and one that shows that there’s still demand for home playable versions of movies that are, to one extent or another, showcases for 3D technology. The fact is that, for a very long while indeed, there had been some significant questions hanging over Avatar’s release, with many suggesting that the eventual disc-based release might well suffer thanks to the relatively low penetration of 3D displays… and the fact that 3D seemed so very large a part of what Avatar had to offer.
While it seems likely that the numbers will continue to rise sharply, we’ll be curious to see just when the film hits in a home 3D display friendly format, because, if nothing else, it should help give some impression of how the market for 3D-capable displays lies.
