Apple has filed a patent for electric specs that will allow you to watch 3D movies on the move. The sunglasses-type device lets users watch content without the need for a TV.
Already the predictable nickname ‘iSpecs’ has been spreading across the web, while ChannelNews adds that users of the device will simply hook up their iPod or iPhone to the head-mounted gadget and be able to watch a 3D movie. A special “smart” lens in the iSpecs projects the image from the screen so that the user can watch the movie on the move.
According to reports, the Apple filing reveals that the lens can split the image into two different frames, one for each eye, so that it appears the picture is being seen from slightly different angles. This will produce a stereoscopic image, giving the illusion the film being watched is three dimensional. The device can also be attached to a camcorder that will then stream video of the outside world into a smaller screen in the glasses.
While similar ‘video glasses’ have been hurt by the issue of users being able to see what’s around them while they have the glasses on, the Apple patent is said to have an inbuilt function that means if someone is approaching the user, “infrared sensors will detect the movement and the video stream will pop up inside the glasses, allowing the wearer to see what is happening”. The company hopes this will enable people to feel comfortable about wearing the device in public situations, such as when travelling on a train or an aircraft.
The patent says the image would be equivalent to high definition quality and could be provided with or without three dimensional effects.
