Nokia to Release Tablet Device?

Posted on 07 April 2010 by komplettie in News

It seems that Nokia could well be the next company to jump in on the tablet bandwagon with word that it could be planning to release a device by Autumn.

If nothing else it's a space that Nokia is eminently prepared for...

Ever since Apple’s official announcement of its own tablet device, the by now apparently inescapable iPad, it seems that everyone with access to touch-screen kit has been pushing towards their own tablet devices, with Microsoft pushing HP’s Slate, along with a number of other devices, as Windows 7 tablet options. Now, it seems that Nokia is looking to get in on the tablet market too, and it could be well placed to do something interesting with its own tablet device.

Word on TheStreet is that industry analyst Ashok Kumar said of Nokia’s current position,

“Nokia hasn’t fielded any breakway products in years … This is a new windows, and Nokia had better be at the starting gate if and when the product category takes off.”

If nothing else, Nokia is well positioned to enter the tablet market, considering it’s long history with mobile internet devices [MIDs] that seemed to stop somewhere in between the current concept of smartphone and tablet. Moreover, the Finnish company’s Booklet 3G netbook, despite the fact that it doesn’t seem to have taken off in a big way, showed us that Nokia is capable of making an interesting entry to a crowded space.

Of course, given Nokia’s current financial situation, the fact is that it can ill afford any large-scale product failures. That much alone could keep it from trying to take on products like the iPad, whose access to the App Store will likely see it do well, or HP’s Slate, which is looking like a very robust option indeed.

“Nokia is well positioned to enter the tablet market” since 2005!

How exactly is this not a tablet but the iPad is? Even 5 years ago this had flash!
Of course now that the iPad is out Apple actually invented the Tablet and the PC, and computers, and the internet…

All I had meant was that Nokia is well positioned to make a splash with something that could really rival what a raft of other companies are pushing out at the moment.

Let’s face it, Nokia has had some of the most interesting tablet-devices out there for years, they just never quite caught on, sadly :( As a result of those devices not having achieved the penetration that they might have, many aren’t really aware they exist… it’s sad to see Nokia where it is now, considering the amount of time it’s spent ahead of the curve.

Would you like to point out any device that’s more capable than the N900?
I think Nokia are still ahead of the curve.

Sadly the blog-o-sphere has turned into one massive Apple hype machine, (see http://bit.ly/bi3JTY ) where every Apple rumour is posted around the net and biased Apple news is shouted all over the place.

There is no doubt that Apple has a very good hold on all tech “news” and an excellent marketing department along with a few thousand rabid fanboys that post and repost the lies so that news gets out.

What it’s sad to see is even in an open environment like the internet a lesser device with more marketing coming out on top of other far better devices.

I have a feeling that, for that reason alone, HP’s Slate could well be a pretty heavy-duty wake up call for Apple. It likely won’t make the same demographic waves the iPad has (for its marketing, as well you point out), but it will help poach some of that core, app-hungry market directly from Apple, and once you start to lose the people who want more functionality from the device, things start to get more interesting.

For the moment, I just want to see more from Nokia. The N900 is gorgeous, but I can’t settle myself on whether it’s a phone or one of these new ‘not-quite-a-netbook’ tablet devices. The feel of it is, strange to say it, just a little too much like a phone and maybe that’s hurt Nokia more than it should have :(
