Google has added a button to its popular Gmail service that will automatically unsubscribe you from newsletters or mailing lists to which you’ve subscribed and now regret but don’t hate quite enough to go back to the source and unsubscribe.

Lovely when things finally leave beta after a long delay.
If you’re like us you’ll have taken to using the “Report Spam” button a little too aggressively, but there are often times when you’d rather still be able to receive messages from the same source as the newsletter you’d rather not continue to receive. Admittedly, that’s not really the best use of the “Report Spam” button – it does less good for all involved.
What’s nice about the new “Unsubscribe” button is that it doesn’t do anything other than send a message to the originator of the newsletter and ask them to unsubscribe you from it. It might not seem like much, but it saves you the trouble of writing one up yourself. Moreover, it would be relatively easy for companies to set up something to automatically recognise mails from Google’s “Unsubscribe” function and remove you from the list accordingly.
