Infinity Ward’s record breaking Modern Warfare 2 can add another fairly impressive number to what’s fast becoming a long list with the news that the game has now hit 25 million players.

Modern Warfare 2 keeps stacking up impressive figures
The news comes via a posting on Activision, the game’s publisher, twitter feed for developers (which you can check out at this page if you’re so inclined), which shows that they’re not just pleased to have hit the 25 million player mark, but that there is finally some news of the upcoming downloadable content. The posting simply reads,
“…annnd we JUST hit 25 MILLION unique players on Modern Warfare 2. Insanity! Also, got a lot of #MW2 DLC details coming this week! FINALLY!”
If nothing else, this is some fairly strong evidence that Modern Warfare 2 is seeing fairly widespread adoption across both of the different consoles it’s available for (though of course, the PC is a little harder to factor in, given that there aren’t exact figures available). According to Microsoft, there are around 23 million subscribers to Xbox Live, while Sony’s PlayStation network boasts 40 million users (largely by dint of offering multiplayer for free). Still, given the success of Modern Warfare 2 on the Xbox 360, we’d be very curious to see just how that 25 million users breaks down between the various console platforms and PCs.
The fact that there’s been good news to post will likely be very welcome indeed, given that the last time Activision made headlines was during the strange situation whereby it fired two of Infinity Ward’s senior staff and then, reportedly posted security outside the building…
