Panasonic 3DTV Prices Down by 50% in US

There’s no confirmation as to whether any similar moves will be happening on this side of the Atlantic but it appears that Panasonic may be just a tad worried that take up of 3DTVs won’t be all they expected;  and with this in mind it’s been announced that they will be cutting some 3DTV set prices by up to 50% in a deal with US shopping giant Best Buy.

An image from Panasonic’s CES2010 marketing blitz on their 3DTVs, will prices tumble for Europe too?

The Wall Street Journal reports that Panasonic will offer US consumers big discounts (when compared to prices on the same products in the Japanese market) on its sets in order to push adoption.

SlashGear says that Panasonic’s current fiscal year ends on March 31, and the electronics giant is looking to sell a million 3D TVs with half that amount in the US alone by that date. Meanwhile the WSJ says that 3D televisions are a critical part of the Japanese electronics giant’s strategy “to reverse losses at its television operation, which was in the red last year”.

Panasonic’s 50-inch 3D model is expected to sell for about $2,500 (€1,800) under the deal in the US compared to about $4800  (just over €3,500) in Japan for the same model.

We’ve done a number of reports on 3DTVs breaking through this year, as well as the possibilities of 3D gaming but, coming on the back of LG’s 3D travails last week, it certainly seems more and more likely that 2010 won’t quite be the year 3DTV makes its mark globally.
