It seems that Star Trek fans are in for something of a bumper year, with word that we can expect to see more games based on the franchise following up on the success of the recent refresh to the movies.

More than half of our office plays Star Trek Online...
Indeed, according to an interview on Trekmovie.com, CBS Products’ vice president, Van Citters, while he was reluctant to talk specifics at all, was fairly clear on the fact that gamers who also just happen to be into Star Trek have plenty to look forward to. Moreover, it seems that we can expect to see more non-MMO Star Trek games, though clearly that’s an avenue that’s worked out very neatly indeed for them.
For those who haven’t been following it, Star Trek Online had initially suffered some fairly bad PR after an impromptu review was released by a particularly negative member of the beta test for the game. However, as the game neared release, popularity likely spurred by the success of last year’s Star Trek movie, which saw the series revisited in an interesting enough way to spark an interest in all things Trek among new fans and those who had lapsed after Enterprise (let’s face it…).
The word from Van Cutter, is positive, and at the same time, so very vague as to reveal very little altogether,
“There are definitely things in the works … There is a great deal of interest in developing new games for Star Trek and we will definitely have more to say about it in the future. I am very excited about what the future is going to hold for Star Trek gaming as a whole.”
While it’s so imprecise that it gives the impression of having simply walked through a fog of words and come out with the idea that they’ll be making more games, it’s still positive stuff, especially given the fact that Star Trek games have very much stagnated in recent years.
Indeed, looking back over the relatively recent releases, Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force seems a gem, and given the fact that it wasn’t too much more than a fairly heavy duty Quake 3 Arena mod, that’s damning with faint praise.
As an aside, does anyone know if the word “trekky” is still used? Haven’t heard it in years.
