Facebook Rolling out New Homepage

It seems that Facebook is well into celebration mode, with the service boasting that on the week of its sixth birthday, the service should break the 400 million user mark. Still, no reason not to try and fix something that’s working…

Am I the only one who just can't see themselves buying Facebook Credits?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted to the official Facebook Blog that the social network would be rolling out a few new features in celebration of the big day. Indeed, some users are already reporting that they’re seeing a new Facebook homepage when they log in, something that has, in the past, been received fairly poorly, but generally people seem to just accept it and roll on.

The post from Zuckerberg is fairly to the point, saying that,

“Tonight we’ll host a celebration at Facebook headquarters, and we’ll release a handful of new things that will improve people’s Facebook experience, including a couple that people have requested a lot. We’ll post more details to our blog in a few hours.”

Still, the Facebook blog posting doesn’t go on to detail just what we can expect to see from these changes. That said, the folks from InsideFacebook do seem to have a much clearer idea than you’d glean just from Facebook’s post.

The new homepage apparently sees notifications shuffled to the top left, rather than the bottom right, and apparently results in more people actually, y’know, reading their notifications. Perhaps most importantly though, there’s been a “Credits Balance” added to Account page, which seems to indicate that Facebook is retooling itself a little to take advantage of its virtual currency, something that many have said has been coming since the middle of last year.

We’ll be curious to see if there’s any very impressive reason to actually stock up on Facebook Credits, but for now there doesn’t seem to be anything too compelling.
