Special Offers

Every week we do a “Deal of the Week” offer; it’s not always as spectacular as our recent Crazy Week offers, but often the price drops are pretty significant. Usually they’re price drops on the kind of items people might be considering buying already and we hope that by highlighting a price cut here and there things all work out nicely for everyone. Normally we hesitate a bit to post them on the blog, because we don’t like to saturate you guys and it makes us feel a bit dodgy, but sometimes the offers are well… pretty cool.

All of which leads me up to my next point, our price cut this week is on a 1TB AC Ryan Playon! DVR knocked down to €259. Normally DVRs are just kind of cool on their own, but Ireland falls outside the domain of TiVo’s stranglehold, so they’re not as widespread here as they are across the pond. The Playon! does all of the usual DVR things, including recording from the telly based on either time or EPG (electronic program guide), which is hip. What caught our interest though is that it’s usable as a NAS (network attached storage) drive. The combination of NAS and DVR means you can comfortably set something to be recorded, then pick it up later on from your laptop without necessarily needing to interact with your TV at all.

It’s nice enough that 1TB is apparently enough for 1200 hours of recorded video, but the fact that you can record direct to an external drive via the USB means you’d never really need to worry about hitting your space limitation as long as you had some extra storage knocking around, and as we’ve said before, space is nice and cheap now. You can grab a terabyte external drive for less than €85, if you’re so inclined. The confluence of USB storage and NAS really makes it a tempting offer. It’s kind of an omni-device.

Oh, and the whole thing is HD Ready, which is the kind of detail that we really enjoy hearing about. You can check it out here.

Update: For those asking, there’s a full list of supported OSes on the home product page at AC Ryan, which you can get to using this link. Before you go to check, Mac OS X is listed :)
