A joint effort between computing giant IBM, An Taisce and the Irish Environmental Protection Agency has seen launch in the form of a website where users can find information on water quality.
TheRegister is reporting that the new service basically aggregates data taken from local authorities and makes is easily accessible to the public through one centralised portal, called “Splash.” Information available on the page itself, which you can access by hitting www.bathingwater.ie is separated out into the latest figures on water quality and annual quality.
The information itself is provided by the relevant local authorities though, so for now users of the service are advised that they should consider contacting the relevant local authority with any queries they have about water quality. The service itself displays a map on which users can highlight areas they’d like to see water quality details for, they are then provided with a snapshot of the waterfront itself, whether or not it has a blue flag and an indication of the water quality.
While there are still a few places where the water quality is listed s “Not Available/Incomplete” in the West, the amount of coverage overall is actually quite good, and we’re impressed by how easy the whole affair is to work with.
If you’re interested in more details, you’d do well to check out TheRegister’s piece on the topic; they managed to get in touch with IBM, so they have some solid quotes to work with. Interestingly enough, IBM is hoping to roll a similar service out to other EU states, so we may be seeing more of this as time goes by.
