Nokia Announces Netbook

It was just yesterday morning that we reported on statements made by Nokia’s chief executive in India that seemed to indicate that Nokia might be working on a netbook. Well, times move fast and Nokia has announced today that it is indeed releasing a netbook.

So far, we don’t know too much about what Nokia is called the Booklet 3G, but we do have some bits and pieces, and what we have seems to indicate a device worth some interest. Everyting else aside, Nokia’s entry to the netbook market is only 2cm thick, has a 10” screen and an aluminium case. The whole thing weighs in at 1¼ KG. This being Nokia thouh, we’re far more interested in the battery and connectivity.

The device’s battery life is being touted as 12 hours, which seems pretty outlandish, but if it manages it under real world conditions we’ll be very impressed. Similarly, it boasts Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and build in 3G, all of which we imagine Nokia has become exceedingly good at miniaturising.

For now, we don’t know what kind of OS it’ll be running, though many are guessing it’ll launch with Windows 7. It’ll be interesting to see how Nokia handles the 3G connection. It seems likely that the Booklet will simply be sold through a network operator and come with a SIM installed by that operator for 3G connectivity.

It’d be equally interesting to see Nokia sell the Booklet as a network agnostic device with users being able to drop in their own SIM for 3G access.

We’ll expect more details in early September as Nokia ramps up to produce the device itself. You can read more, including analysts opinions of the device, at the BBC, here.
