Handheld 3D gaming will be one of the big themes of 2011, with Japanese game developers Konami expected to provide plenty of the first wave of titles.

Batter up... 'Mobile Powerful Pro Baseball 3D' on the way.

Though, while most of us had expected Konami to hold their fire until the release Nintendo’s much anticipated 3DS, the company is set to release its debut 3D title, Mobile Powerful Pro Baseball 3D, for smartphones instead.

First reported by CVG, 3DRadar pointed out that while this is all pretty cool news, we won’t actually get to see the games on this side of the world for a good while yet. Instead, Konami are tailoring the titles for Sharp’s new Galapagos 3D Android handsets, which are being released in Japan early next year.

Mobile Powerful Pro Baseball 3D – the latest in its long-running Powerful Pro Baseball series – will come as a pre-installed game on the new 3D Android smartphones and it will be joined by a golf game with similar cartoon-ish visuals, Golfriends, which will use the touch screen for control.
Sharp is actually producing the technology behind the Nintendo 3DS screen and the company is currently focused on trying out the same tech in mobile phones in The Far East. The Galapagos handsets come equipped with a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, Android 2.2 as an OS, and a 3.8-inch 3D-capable display which has 800 x 480 pixel resolution.

Fingers crossed we see them at some point next year anyway.
