There’s a pretty troubling story coming out of China today regarding a 16 year old internet addict dying after just two days in a boot camp for troubled children. Apparently, the victim was beaten to death.

Internet addiction among Chinese youth is widespread — 1 in 10 teenage internet users are estimated to suffer from the problem.
The teen was brought by to the camp by his mother who promised he would be studying IT. Unfortunately, 16-year-old Chen Shi died within 48 hours of his arrival at the Beiteng School in Changsha, capital of central China’s Hunan province.
Gizmodo reports that a day at a typical Chinese internet addiction boot camp begins with a 6:20am wake up call and morning exercises. The day continues with a strict regiment of military drills, lectures, martial arts training, and sessions with psychologists. Lights out is at 9:30 sharp and while some boot camps employ the use of electric shock treatment, others, like the Beiteng School feel beating their students is the best way of getting results.
According to another report on TG Daily the incident occurred after Shi refused a direct order. He then sustained critical injuries after being beaten by instructors with a plastic pipe, handcuffs and a wooden baton. His mother, Tang Yulin, told the Beijing Times that she had enrolled Chen in an effort to toughen him up because he was “afraid of hardship, had weak willpower and not enough self-confidence.”
Yulin reportedly paid some 22,800 yuan (€2,475) for six months of boot camp and was told she would not be able to contact her son directly for the duration of his training.
She received a call just two days later from the military style academy, informing her that Chen was in critical condition after “possibly” suffering sunstroke. At least three people have already been detained on suspicion of killing the teen.
