Nintendo has been talking about the difficulties of creating the next generation Wii console for several months now, with one of the creators of the device – and indeed designer of some of the company’s finest games – Shigeru Miyamoto saying, “I think that in the next generation of (Wii) hardware, the challenge is how unique and different a product Nintendo is able to make.”
However, it now appears that the Wii will only see mild evolution rather than all round revolution in 2011 though, as rumours grow of a HD Wii 2 coming out next year.
Dvice were one of the first to note the news and they commented that, “The Nintendo Wii is the only current-generation console that doesn’t pump out HD content. It wasn’t that big a deal at first, but it’s made the console not age particularly gracefully.”
So the move makes sense alright, but will it get potential Microsoft Kinect or Sony PlayStation Move buyers to back away and hold on for the next Wii?
This particular rumour consists of a “next-generation Wii in the works that sports both HD output as well as a Blu-ray drive, much like the current PlayStation 3”. Though as Dvice also noted, Blu-ray drives can often add cost to a product and also, there are plenty of indications pointing towards the makers of the next generation of consoles “moving exclusively to downloads”.
You’d have to imagine Nintendo has a lot more up their sleeves for the next Wii though, with the motion control market finally getting crowded. Expect some announcements late on this year to try and steal some thunder from the launch of its competitors.
