Released here in the middle of this month, the newly slim Xbox 360 is apparently a huge hit in the US already, with Microsoft excitedly releasing a statement talking about how the Xbox 360 250GB (as it’s been quite boringly dubbed) is “experiencing unprecedented demand” from retailers.

"Sleeker, smaller, and whisper-quiet."

Following on from a major launch at E3 last month – which came hot on the heels of the shiny, happy MTV unveiling of the motion-based Kinect – Micrsoft said, “Consumers are eager to experience this new console, completely redesigned for the future of entertainment: sleeker, smaller, and whisper-quiet.”

The Microsoft statement continued, “Strong demand for the new Xbox 360 250GB combined with a $50 price reduction in the US on the Xbox 360 Arcade and Elite consoles, now US$149.99 and US$249.99 respectively, has resulted in a significant sales spike for Xbox 360 since the new console hit shelves on or around June 14.”

The news came as part of a press release on sales figures for the month of May which showed that 194,600 Xbox consoles were sold that month in the US, compared to 154,500 Sony Playstations. As VG247 notes, “Both were comprehensively beaten by Wii and DS, with 334,800 and 383,700 sales respectively.”
