Spotify Adds Video

Music streaming service Spotify is set to roll out a video service to match its very successful audio offering, starting with Sweden and Finland.

Word of the move comes via TechRadar, which notes that the move comes as the result of a partnership with Scandinavian TeliaSonera, which will be providing the video content for the first two countries in which Spotify offers video content. For the moment though, the video service will only be available to customers of TeliaSonera who also happen to be paying for a premium Spotify account.

This move from Spotify is an interesting one, in that it comes at a time when things seem to be moving more and more towards digital TV offerings from established tech companies. The rumours that Apple is working on a new version of the Apple TV, based on tech conscripted from its iPhone line, as well as the word that Google and Intel will be releasing Android-based set-top boxes.

With the renewed interest from big-names in pushing for video content through the internet, we’ll be curious to see just how well Spotify’s video offering is received. Of course, depending on how well the whole affair works out for Spotify in Sweden and Finland, it seems reasonable that the company will end up making similar offerings in other countries.

Of course, the vast majority of those of us in Ireland can’t sign up for Spotify at the moment, since the company blocked access to Irish users of its free service late last year. Still, hopes are high for an Irish Spotify offering at some stage… if, by then, the service’s video offering had been expanded, things would be very pleasant indeed.
